Due to the high value and pH-resistance of the QE, MiCy would probably be a more efficient and reliable donor for FRET than ECFP. In addition, fluorescence lifetime measurement revealed that MiCy fluorescence displayed as a single exponential decay with a time constant of 3.4 ns.

Since all of the non-bioluminescent Anthozoan GFP-like proteins characterized so far form obligate tetramers (Labas et al 2002), the dimer formation of MiCy may indicate structural divergence of the protein family.
